South Florida's Vintage Scene

.

By Rafael Tassitano, Photography by Rafael Tassitano

On a late October morning, Mods and Rockers again gathered at a seaside resort town for an epic event. But this wasn’t Brighton Beach in the 1960s; it was Fort Lauderdale 50 years later. Mods and Rockers in South Florida? Why not—it’s the second-largest motorcycle market in the country after Southern California; it’s just known more for blinged-out choppers and sportbikes than cool café racers. The annual Mods vs. Rockers Rally has proven to be a fantastic gathering of motorcycles and scooters that highlights South Florida’s nascent vintage scene... Read more

Drake McElroy to appear on 'Café Racer'

.

The only thing Drake McElroy has in his garage that outnumbers his motorcycle collection is Post-It notes. It's those multi-colored 3-in. by 3-in. squares that harbor the sketches, doodles and designs of a guy who likes to build motorcycles that get people to say, "What is that?" McElroy, the 2002 X Games Moto X Freestyle Bronze Medalist and current XG judge, has taken a part of his collection that includes freestyle and supermoto bikes and converted them into café racer street bikes. McElroy and his creations will be featured on season three of Velocity network's 'Café Racer,' which runs in spring of 2012... Read more

.

Craig Vechorik(left) of Bench Mark Works in Sturgis talks with Nick Jeffcoat of Florence about Vechorik's 1942 BMW R75 with a MG 34 machine gun and driven side-car wheel while exhibiting the bike at the Euro Fest in Ridgeland recently. / Barbara Gauntt/ The Clarion-Ledger

In 1967, at age 16, Craig Vechorik was given the keys to his first car - a 1958 Rambler that had more miles on it than a road map.
"I hadn't had it no time before I tore the clutch out of it," says Vechorik, 60. "My dad told me he couldn't afford to have it fixed. So he bought me a box of tools, a motor manual, the parts for it and told me to fix it myself... Read more

The Best Vintage Motorcycles At Pebble Beach

.

By HannahElliott via : www.forbes.com

You might think Pebble Beach weekend is all about cars. It’s not.

Yesterday at The Quail Motor Show, a handful of supremely rare, expensive motorcycles were on display as well.
Included among them were a 1957 Triumph T110 Desert Sled, a 1966 BMW R69/S, and a 1987 Ducati Laguna Seca. The ultimate find was a 1940 Brough Superior 982cc SS100, the last of its kind to leave the Nottingham factory. It’s valued at $350,000 – $400,000.

Let the good times roll

Motorcycle Hall of Famers Yvon Duhamel, Gary Nixon, Jimmy Weinert, Eddie Lawson, Jeff Fredette, Jeff Ward, Mike Kiedrowski. The list of riders who became famous racing Kawasaki motorcycles is long and distinguished—as is the number of regular enthusiasts who have grown to love the brand and all of its renditions, from the incredible Mach III 500cc two-stroke in 1969 to the modern Ninja sportbike.
That history will take center stage this July 22-24 at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, where Kawasaki will be honored as this year’s Marque of the Year.

Bikes on the Bay

.

By Cathy Kelly

Capitola -- Old motorcycles found new appreciation Sunday at the Bikes on the Bay vintage show at the Capitola Mall.

The collection of old bikes drew hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Capitola Mall parking lot Sunday. Orchestrated by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce, the sixth annual event has been at the mall for four years and is growing, chamber Director Toni Castro said.

"It's seems to be going very well," Castro said, over sounds of laughter, music and motors. The event included vendors, too, along with an impressive array of vintage motorcycles and some scooters. Ringing the event were the motorcycles of those who rode in to see the officially displayed motorcycles... Read more
